U.S. Reps Murphy, Kelly Accepted Contributions from NRA in 2012 House Campaigns
Open Secrets has published a list of recipients of National Rifle Association campaign contributions that also includes outgoing U.S. Reps. Mark Critz of Johnstown and Jason Altmire of McCandless, both Democrats.
U.S. Reps Tom Murphy (R-Upper St. Clair), Mark Critz (D-Johnstown), Jason Altmire (D-McCandless) and Mike Kelly (R-Butler) of Pennsylvania accepted thousands in 2012 campaign contributions from the National Rifle Association, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.
The NRA doled out more than $750,000 in campaign contributions in 2012, according to the center, a research organization that tracks money in politics and how it affects elections and policies and shares the information on OpenSecrets.org. The center obtained its data from the Federal Election Commission.
Fifteen members of Congress from Pennsylvania accepted contributions from the NRA during their 2012 bids for office, according to the center's list. Three of the top five are from Western Pennsylvania, accepting a combined total of $11,000 in contributions.
Murphy topped the list, accepting a $5,000 contribution during his successful campaign to retain his seat in District 18. He defeated Washington County Commissioner Larry Maggi, a Democrat.
Critz, the outgoing Democrat, is third on the center's list with a $3,500 contribution from the NRA. After serving one term in the House of Representatives, Critz lost his re-election bid in an aggressive race with Sewickley Republican Keith Rothfus for the seat in the newly formed District 12.
Fifth on the list is Altmire, with a $2,500 contribution. The three-term congressman lost his seat earlier this year in a primary race with Critz after a GOP-led redistricting effort reshaped their districts and forced them to run against each other. He has accepted a new position with Florida Blue, that state's Blue Cross and Blue Shield health insurer.
Kelly, a Republican, is ninth on the center's list, with a $2,000 contribution. The Butler County car dealer, whose district includes Cranberry, defeated Democrat Missa Eaton and independent candidate Steven Porter to retain his seat in the 3rd District.

Of the 435 members of the new House, 205 – or 47 percent – received some money from the NRA during the last campaign. More than half have taken NRA money at some point in their career. Of the Senate’s 100 members, 42 received contributions this past cycle and exactly half have received contributions at some point in their career. All told, 88 percent of Republicans now in Congress have received a contribution from the NRA at some point in their career, as have 11 percent of Democrats.

No, instead he broke a bunch of campaign promises like keeping lobbyists out of his administration, opening the WH to transparency, ending war, closing gitmo, reducing the budget deficit, tabling the war on drugs, etc... Oh yeah, he also a killed a bunch of people in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan..... including a freaking U.S. citizen without due process and has a kill list. So the largest contribution was $5,000? Were the contributions illegal? This news doesn't sound like much of a "secret," open or otherwise. Slow news day?

Thank you. It appears we have some anti-Second Amendment folks here. Where were they when their president was accepting overseas donations in the form of pre-paid credit cards.

Sorry but I can't seem to work up too much excitement about this. Legal contributions are not hard to find; it's a matter of public record. Is this intended to turn everyone against the Second Amendment? Is it intended to be disguised as a "legitimate" bullying flame we read about?
Let's talk about the ILLEGAL contributions made to campaigns. How about the millions of dollars contributed to a very high level campaign from overseas? How about the hundreds of thousands of dollars pumped into local races by super PAC's, where those making illegal donations can remain hidden? How about over-the-limit contributions? Did you find anything that resembles ILLEGAL activity in the records of any of these four gentlemen??

Duke, I think that's more of a commentary on how diametrically opposed the two are than a statement about our president.

And I agree hus4154, the witch hunt will be in full force soon! As different groups roll out their agendas in the face of tragedy, we will see this kind of nonsense from both sides, unfortunately. Some people love tragedy because it gives them a reason to push their agendas. Sad.

Wow, this is lazy, pathetic 'reporting' if that's what you want to call it. ORGANIZATIONS CANNOT donate to individuals! It takes an entire 3 minutes to understand the figures on that page, but since you guys were too lazy to research it yourself I'll spell it out for you (via the website you reference):
The organizations themselves did not donate , rather the money came from the organizations' PACs, their individual members or employees or owners, and those individuals' immediate families. Organization totals include subsidiaries and affiliates.

I really saddened to see this site stoop to posting a piece like this. This isn't news, it's nothing more than bashing "the other side".

As somebody above suggested, it must be a slow news day.
The pejorative nature of the piece speaks volumes about what these "journalists" think about the matter. Is it any wonder why so many people have a negative view of the so-called journalists that write for many news outlets.
What does this story have to do with anything? The NRA has been around for a long time. Many Congressmen/women have been around for a long time. Trying to make a negative implication at this juncture means nothing. This story is as hollow as an empty 50 gallon drum.
P.S. How did this ever get past the regional editor? Or, are the authors THE regional editors?

While this is the time when most of the hate is against anything that has to do with guns. The thing for the political arena is to get on the side of the people that feel that way, while it last and to drive that point home. And as with incidents like this it will fade away. However, because of the circumstances of this shooting it hurts more and they hope to score more political points. So if anything, those trying to score those point should be ridiculed.

Consider this PLEASE - Alaskans need firearms to protect themselves against wildlife and as a means to a winter food source. Ranchers need firearms to protect their herds against invasive predators. Crime and law enforcement has always been armed esp in the prisons. hOLLYWOOD VIOLENCE IN THE MOVIES, PORN, VIDEOS, MUSIC etc. Didnt hear obama say 1 thing about that and Hollywood supports him 100%. by the way, while the people in Newtown are mending, Mr. Pres is doing the hula in Hawaii. aloha!

Your points about the "entertainment"/slop industry are excellent. No, the president has not mentioned that, at least not yet. If he chooses to ignore it, we will not be able to tackle and attempt to solve the gun homicide epidemic as there is no one cause for it nor any simple step we can take to stem it. Charles Krauthammer has an excellent column about this issue in today's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Obama is nothing but A hypocrit. It was the justice department under his administration that came up with the disaster called "Fast and Furious" A failed program to catch Drug Cartels and Drug Runners by tracking firearms. What happeened? They lost thousands of assault weapons to the cartels and smugglers, weapons being used to attack and kill american law enforcement. Gun control he says, huh?

Why would we need a new Gun Law. There are numerous gun laws that have not stopped the killings. It is mental illness that is killing people. The state closed the mental hospital and there will always be mental ill people that should live in a supervised home. It is up o the state to help the mentally ill..Accepting contributions from NRA is not a crime. US Rep. Murphy will always get my vote.
