North Allegheny Teen Driver Awarded in Safe Driving Competition

The Allegheny County Safe Driving Committee held the fourth annual Teen Safe Driving Competition.

A North Allegheny student finished in third place in the fourth annual Teen Safe Driving Competition.

The contest sponsored by the Allegheny County Safe Driving Committee was held Tuesday at the Pittsburgh Technical Institute in Oakdale.

  • First place winner was Peter Bartolomucci from Cornell School District, who was awarded $1,000.
  • Runner-up was Taylor Scales from Moon Area School District, who received $500.
  • Third place was Garrett Besonson from North Allegheny School District and won $250.
  • Winner of the team prize was Shaler School District and will receive a $500 donation.

The Allstate Foundation provided the prize money through a grant partnership with Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC.

In addition to a written safety-knowledge exam, students were judged on perceptual assessment and a driving skills test.  Pennsylvania State Police; Allegheny County Police; state and county officials; and other safety stakeholders judged the event.

Students from 10 area school districts competed for the prizes. Other participating schools included Bethel Park, Chartiers Valley, Keystone Oaks, Northgate, Riverview, Shaler and Sto-Rox.

The top two winners have the opportunity to compete in the Pennsylvania Safe Driving Competition for Youth in May.
