First Look: Plans for Dick's Sporting Goods at McCandless Crossing

No one is saying what the new store will mean for the Dick's at Northway Mall.

Members of the McCandless Planning Commission got their first look Tuesday at plans for a Dick’s Sporting Goods store at McCandless Crossing.

“The reason that we are here tonight is to not to approve a Dick’s per say, we’re just calling it Dick’s because that’s what the proposal is,” explained Bruce Betty, Land Use Administrator, to the committee during the meeting. “So I wanted to point out and make it clear why we’re here. It’s not to approve a certain store. It’s because we are changing the sizes of the buildings.”

Developer Robert McGurk from AdVenture Development, LLC. said construction on the 50,000 square foot store would begin in September.

Dick’s would be located next to the proposed Homegoods location. According to McGurk, the construction on both Homegoods and Dick’s Sporting Goods should conclude at the same time, in spring of 2014.

Dick’s Sporting Goods had 520 stores as of last May and expected to open 40 new locations and relocate one existing location in 2013, according a report published on the retailers website last month.

The closest Dick's Sporting Goods to McCandless is the store at the Shoppes at Northway in Ross.

It's not clear what would happen to the Ross location once a store in McCandless Crossing is open. A representative of Dick's has been unavailable for comment.

When Dick's opened its new location in Cranberry, it decided to renovate the vacated space into a new sporting goods concept store called Field & Stream.

The new store’s target audience is outdoor lovers. The store will provide an expanded selection of hunting, fishing, hiking and camping equipment from what is currently available at the standard Dick’s Sporting Goods stores.
