Below is a portion of his letter to the McCandless Republican Committee seeking its endorsement:

My job requires me to engage and collaborate with people, manage and motivate staff, solve business and technical problems, establish and manage a budget, manage the quality of our service and the capacity of our systems, communicate with senior executives, and negotiate with our suppliers.

During my career, I resided in Penn Hills, Wilkinsburg, and Seven Fields. I ultimately choose to live in McCandless because it was part of North Allegheny's school system. My wife, Eileen, and I wanted to be able to provide the best education for our children. From my experience in college, I recognize the value of a quality education in a competitive environment. North Allegheny had and still has a reputation for providing an elite public education, and that's where we wanted our children to attend school.

I have coached soccer at three different age levels, coached flag football, served on the board of the Cystic Fibrosis 100K/50 Mile/5K GNC Race Challenge, and described my job to a second grade class as part of a self-created "Bring Your Dad to School Day." I believe that my energy, enthusiasm, commitment, and skills qualify me as a candidate for a School Director of the North Allegheny School District.

At its meeting on April 3, the McCandless Republican committee endorsed Russell, Tara Fisher, Gary Wenig and incumbent Tom Schwartzmier for the NA School Board.
